Fortunately, there are numerous treatment options for those in need raging from acute care in hospitals to long term residential treatment centers across the United States and Canada. It is all too chilling to witness the steady, tragic downfall as weight declines and health deteriorates. Bulimia, however, takes on a much more silent approach.

EDRC Presents Author Jenni Schaefer on Recovery from Eating DisordersOctober 2010 - EDRC and San Jose State University are partnering with the Center for Change to sponsor a free community event featuring author and speaker Jenni Schaefer. Her presentation will be Thursday, Nov. 4, from 4:30 – 5:30 in rooms 225/229 at Dr. Martin Luther King Library in downtown San Jose. On June 26, 2010 the Eating Disorders Resource Center (EDRC) had its first ever Every Body’s Beautiful Awareness Day and Fashion Event. The purpose of the event was to raise media awareness on how beauty and body image are fallaciously advertised to the public. We are surrounded by images of what beauty is suppose to look like instead of what true beauty really is. The images advertised in today’s media outlets are far from reality and in some cases can have a negative impact on many people’s lives, whether it be descending into an easting disorder, self disapproval or becoming obsessed with one’s outer appearance. In order to convey our message, the EDRC also held an Every Body’s Beautiful Essay Contest. We had over 180 students from 25 middle and high schools throughout EDRC Announces 2010 Essay Contest WinnersMay 2010 - Eating Disorders Resource Center (EDRC) has named the winning writers for their Every Body’s Beautiful Essay Contest, which they hosted this spring in recognition of National Eating Disorders Week 2010. EDRC Volunteers Recognized at Junior League LuncheonMay 2010 - On May 7, EDRC volunteers and support group leaders Nancy Boyle and Debra Schlesinger were honored at the Junior League of Santa Clara County's 41st Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon.

Nancy Boyle tirelessly follows up with parents who call us needing support and guidance, coordinates guest speakers for our support groups, and does one-to-one follow up with parents and clients. Why she volunteers: “After dealing with my two daughters' disorders on my own, I did not want anyone else dealing with this to have to do it alone… My goal for the group is that they leave with new coping skills and feel more confident in themselves in dealing with difficult issues at home.”
Debra Schlesinger co-leads the support group for family members and loved ones. She has been key to our outreach, including leading our team for the 2009 NEDA walk. She speaks at local high schools and provides online mentoring support for patients and their family members. Why she volunteers: “It provides me with the opportunity to help other parents and loved ones with the support they need and to provide a safe place to talk about the struggles they are experiencing.”
