March 2011 - Eating Disorders Resource Center (EDRC) has named the winning writers for their 2nd Annual Every Body’s Beautiful Essay Contest, which they hosted this fall/winter in recognition of National Eating Disorders Week 2011. Sponsored by Kaiser Permanente San Jose, the contest gave local students the opportunity to discuss what is beautiful about them.
EDRC received a total of 74 essays from 6th-12th grade boys and girls in 25 schools throughout Santa Clara County. Students were asked to answer the following questions: What do you love about yourself? Why should others love and accept themselves? How does the mass media affect your body image and how do you deal with this? Volunteer judges scored them based on how well they answered the questions, their voice and use of language, organization of paragraphs, and mechanics. Cash prizes were awarded to the top four Middle and High School essays (in both groups, students tied for 2nd place). EDRC would like thank all participating students, teachers, school administrators and volunteer judges (listed below) for helping to make the contest a success.
