CREDENTIALS/DISCIPLINE: I'm a general pediatrician & the director of the Teen Health Center at Kaiser Santa Teresa (San Jose). I work with a multidisciplinary group at Kaiser Permanente when treating Teens with eating disorders.
Board Certified: General Pediatrics.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
Number of years treating patients with eating disorders: 10+ years
Number of patients with eating disorders you treat annually: 1-5

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERTISE: I'm board certified by The American Board of Pediatrics & Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. I have general interest in the adolescent population & the challenge it represents.

TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY: Eating Disorders have experienced dramatic change epidemiologically in the last 20 years. It remains one of the most challenging area in medicine to intervene. Each case is unique & comes with different co-morbidity factors. I strongly believe that early diagnosis & intervention will lead to better outcome. A multidisciplinary approach is quite often needed to serve the eating disordered teen population.
Yes, I feel you can recover from an eating disorder. A summary of treatment studies for Anorexia Nervosa found that 47% of people recover completely (no further symptoms), 34% improve, 21% develop a chronic eating disorder and 5% die. As for Bulimia nervosa, short term studies with trial of antidepressant & structured, intensive grp therapy) showed 50% full recovery (no further problems), 30% partial recovery & 20% continued with symptoms. Whereas long term studies showed 70% were in full or partial remission, the rest continued with symptoms.
