EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERTISE: I have a BS degree in Nursing, and an MS. degree in clinical Psychology. I am currently enrolled in the JFK University Eating Disorder Certificate program. I have approx. 50 continuing education hours in the treatment of eating disorders. I have both nursing and counseling experience in eating disorder treatment.

TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY: I use a combination of cognitive-behavioral (CBT) therapy, and psychodynamic therapy to treat eating disorders. CBT is used to normalize food intake and eliminate negative behaviors. Psychodynamic therapy addresses self-esteem, body image, impulse control, family of origin messages about food, and one's own relationship with food. I use a multidisciplinary approach and work with a medical doctor, nutritionist and psychiatrist as needed.

I think it is possible to recover from an eating disorder. Recovery is regaining balance in relationships, including one's relationship with food. It is living without eating disorder symptoms, normalizing food intake, using exercise properly, identifying triggers for negative behaviors, and using health alternative coping strategies. Recovery is a lifelong process. Lapses and relapse can occur in recovery. They indicate unbalance, and the goal is to return to balance quickly.
