TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY: Because treatment for an eating disorder requires the client to undergo rigorous and intense therapy often with several professionals, e.g. therapist, nutritionist, psychiatrist, etc.., I work with the client to be gentle with herself. I encourage her to view therapy as a comforting and supportive place to work on changing the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that are keeping the eating disorder in place.
Yes, I think it is possible to recover from an eating disorder and define recovery as: Recovery is an ongoing process that each individual defines differently. In general, when 'eating issues' no longer dominate the patient's life, e.g. thoughts and behaviors, all day for most of the day, there is some recovery. While many people with eating disorders will have to remain aware of triggers, obsessive thoughts and behaviors around eating, it will not distress nor control the person as it does when in the grips of the disorder. The individual has ability and freedom of eating behavior even when stressed and can function fully in their life.
