EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERTISE:I have a master’s degree in counseling psychology from John F. Kennedy University , and passed the exams for licensure, earning my license in March 2010. Currently, I am working on an Eating Disorders Certification at John F. Kennedy University, and should complete the coursework by early to mid-2012. In addition, I have taken workshops that utilize a Narrative Therapy approach to working with eating disorders. I have consulted with these providers, have read their published works, and received two manuscripts that should be published in the next year or so. I have Type 1 Diabetes and look forward to working with this population.
TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY: Metaphorically, I locate problems outside of persons. In this way the client stands more distantly from the problem, In order to explore and understand the effects of the eating disorder, as well as ways the eating disorder was able to gain power over the client. At the same time, this perspective reduces shame and blame, as well as the idea of being a failure or dysfunctional. From this vantage point, we examine in small detail the many effects of an eating disorder on the client, as well as those times the client has resisted or not succumbed to the eating disorder’s demands. We spend time examining what the eating disorder has taken from the client, i.e., health, spirit, and identity, and we actively engage in conversations about what family and friends know about this person away from the eating disorder. In this way, we are working together to help the client reclaim her or his identity, and helping to create an identity the client prefers.
Yes, I feel you can recover from an eating disorder. I work with clients with the idea of helping them to change their relationship with the eating disorder she or he is struggling with. In some instances, the eating disorder does, indeed, disappear. It may try to make a comeback, but we work together to prepare for this possibility, should it occur. For other clients, the eating disorder may still remain in the background, and try to influence the person. Yet the relationship has changed, and the client has much more power over the eating disorder. I look at both of these scenarios as recovery.
