TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY: My work is informed by a number of approaches including cognitive/behavioral, psychodynamic, transactional and family systems. A collaborative team approach including a psychiatrist, primary care physician, and a registered dietician is especially helpful in working with eating disorders. As a therapist I see my role as a trusted professional here to help increase a client's self-understanding, and consider options to move in the direction of better overall health and balance.
I think it is possible to recover from an eating disorder and define recovery as:I think in most cases an eating disorders remains an underlying factor in one's life journey. Recovery, however, is when the eating disorder no longer is the organizing feature of one's life. With enough tools and self-understanding it moves to a background position and can pop up as an indicator when we are over-stressed or out of balance. It becomes like a red light on the dashboard of your car that gets your attention before there is a problem with your engine.
