CREDENTIALS/DISCIPLINE: Clinical Psychologist--Ph.D. I am licensed in the state of California
Board Certified: No
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
Number of years treating patients with eating disorders: 10+ years
Number of patients with eating disorders treated annually: 15+
EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERTISE: After I received by Ph.D., I deepened my experience treating people with EDs at Newton-Wellesley Hospital ED Clinic. Then in MA, I had a private practice for over 20 years, treating college and graduate students from the colleges in Cambridge and Boston as well as other folks. I'm a longtime member of the Academy for Eating Disorders. I've also been certified in clinical hypnosis, a technique that I sometimes use to help people address body image issues.
TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY: My clinical approach is to "lead" with CBT, particularly for patients who are new to treatment. When patients are not able to make good use of the skills and tools of CBT, my approach in sessions tends to shift, focusing on family issues that help maintain the disorder, and well as underlying issues that lead the patients to be more ambivalent about recovery.
I think it is possible to recover from an eating disorder and define recovery as:Being able to feed oneself adequately without being self-destructive in the process, to feel relatively comfortable being inside one's skin (as much as possible, given our current culture), and most importantly, moving past a self-identity of someone with an eating disorder to someone who enjoys a variety of pursuits and relationships and who accepts having both strengths and weaknesses.
