EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERTISE: I have been a psychotherapist over 29 years, have a Masters in Counseling Psychology, and have supervised apporiximately 150 interns. I specialize in working with families of eating disordered individuals. For over 10 years I have administered over 1,000 psychological assessments to bariatric patients to determine their readiness for the surgery. Additionally, during this evaluation they are given education, referrals, and alternative coping tools.
TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY: As a cognitive behavioral therapist I create a therapeutic environment of acceptance, nurturance, and growth where patients are encouraged to explore their belief systems and their current courses of action. Family therapy is often useful in helping a family properly support an eating disorder member. During family therapy sessions family members will be provided with resources and education. Depression, anxiety, and trauma among the family members are key components addressed in family treatment. Forming solutions and determinging roles may help to relieve their areas of dysfunction and stress.
Yes I believe it is possible for both the individual and the family to recover from an eating disorder. By using a team approach, a person with an eating disorder can learn to better understand their relationship with food, develop better coping strategies regarding their external environment, and gain a greater sense of themselves.
