EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERTISE: As mentioned above, I am a liscensed clinical social worker with over fifteen years of experience in a variety of therapeutic settings. I have recieved a certificate of completion in group treatment of eating disorders, using expressive arts in the treatment of eating disorders, and the medical and physiological complications of eating disorders. In addition I try to stay current on the most up to date treatment approaches to eating disorders and just attended a four day seminar in which the leaders in the field presented the most effective and up to date approaches to treating eating disorders. As mentioned above, I have special training and expertise in group treatment of eating disorders and in using expressive arts in the treatment of eating disorders.

TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY: Due to the serious risks to physical health that eating disorders pose, my treatment philosophy is that it is important to work with a treatment team to ensure that clients are receiving support for the medical aspects of their eating disorder as well as the emotional aspects and that for a client in the initual stages of treatment who may be medically fragile, the first goal will be to ensure the clients physical health is addressed and restored. Once the physical risk has been addressed and minimized, I use an integrated approach which may include, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, relational cultural, feminist, and mindfulness based treatment methods. My treatment philosophy is that the eating disorder is likely a coping method that the client developed to deal with paiful or difficult to access emotions and that together using a variety of tools, the client and therapist can over time devlop new and healthier ways of coping and process the underlying issues in a safe and nurturing yet honest environment.

I think it is possible to recover from an eating disorder. I would define true recovery as no longer using food or any other substance to fulfill or mask emotional needs but rather to using it tosustain and nourish the body. While complete recovery may be a lofty goal, I believe clients can learn to develop the skills to make healthy and conscious choices most of the time and to see any potential relapses as learning opportunites that they can learn to use as tools to further their success rather than as signs of weakness or failure as I believe learning to be forgiving and patient with oneself is also an important goal for clients with eating disorders to develop.
